PhD in EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY AND ECOLOGY
The program in Evolutionary Biology and Ecology is structured in three years and offers a unique multidisciplinary training experience leading to a Doctorate degree. The Biology Department in partnership with private and public institutions in the Rome area have formed a Program that crosses traditional disciplinary boundaries to offer the student the appropriate multidisciplinary research training and to enrich the plurality of knowledge. The Scientific Board is made of experts of various scientific fields and graduate students can select from research opportunities in areas as diverse as Anthropology, Applied Biology, Applied Biochemistry, Botany, Ecology, Genetics, Microbiology, Parassitology, Physiology and Zoology. Graduate students are expected to devote their full time to research and study. The main goal of our program consists in enabling students to become independent, creative, and productive researchers by cultivating their skills in a multidisciplinary environment.
Specialized courses, English courses (at different skill levels), courses in Statistics and Informatics are programmed. In addition, ad hoc seminars will be also held to train PhD students in research management, research and funding systems, exploitation of research results and intellectual property.
Seminars and workshops related to research topics of the School of Doctorate, held by external lecturers, will be planned. PhD students will be encouraged to participate in the discussion. Journal Club meetings will also be regularly scheduled to both stimulate scientific discussions and convey the message that constant update is important in scientific research.
The students will also be encouraged to have experiences abroad with international Universities and Research Centers of proven value.
At the end of each year of activity, each student is asked to present her/his research achievements, publicly discussing them at the presence of the members of the Scientic Board. The Scientic Board decide upon the student's promotion to the next year of Doctorate. The students are required to publish the results of their research on top international journals. A good knowledge of English is required, and the doctoral thesis must be written in English.
