 PhD in MEDICAL-SURGICAL APPLIED SCIENCES

SHORT DESCRIPTION

PhD Programme in Medical-Surgical Applied Sciences is divided in five research areas:

  1. Oncoplastic Breast Surgery;
  2. Plastic Regenerative Surgery;
  3. Clinical Nutrition;
  4. Innovative Technologies and Medical Engineering for Surgery;
  5. Forensic sciences.

The PhD programme is open to holders of second-cycle degrees (ie. Masters Degrees), or similar academic title, awarded overseas and recognized as equivalent to an Italian degree. The programme aims to prepare students for scientific research in field of Oncoplastic Breast Surgery, Plastic Regenerative Surgery, Clinical Nutrition, Innovative Technologies and Medical Engineering for Surgery Forensic Sciences.

DESCRIPTION OF THE EDUCATIONAL AND RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

For the chosen research areas, PhD students develop the following specific knowledges and skills:

  • Oncoplastic Breast Surgery area: students will address the following issues: sentinel lymph node and radio-guided surgery in breast disease, radical and reconstructive breast surgery, etc;
  • Plastic Regenerative Surgery area: students will address the following issues: stem cell surgery applied in modern methods of reconstructive surgery;
  • Clinical Nutrition area: students will address the following issues: role of body composition and proinflammatory cytokines in diseases and biological therapies, association between body composition and genetic polymorphisms, nutrigenomics and nutrigenetics, comparison of methods of evaluation of body composition, comparison of organic agriculture and conventional production on health, study of effects of Italian Mediterranean Diet on health;
  • Innovative Technologies and Medical Engineering for Surgery area: students will address the following issues: development and application of new technologies in surgery;
  • Forensic sciences area: students address the following issues criminal liability, civil liability, ethical liability and administrative liability of the doctor, analysis all the judgments in the field of medical liability.

The educational and research activities will focus on new diagnostic methods; molecular bases of pathologies; toxigenomics and metabolomics; nutrigenetics and nutrigenomics; and on validation of Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS), protocols on surgical pathologies, use and misuse of technologies for surgery, development of new instruments including magnetic driven instruments, techniques and technologies for minimally invasive treatments, including Rfid, robotics and microrobotics, micromachines. These areas of interest are oriented to transfer innovation to the P4 Medicine (Personalized, Predictive, Preventive, and Participatory) and to evaluate the possible consequences in the medico-legal context.
